The Story of Luttstone

The Story of Luttstone

LuttStone is a gypsum based composite stone that we mix in-house.  We blend in sands and mica for texture and iron oxide pigments to achieve deeper colors.  The mix is poured into a our silicone molds and cured in a pressure tank for 2 hours, then the silicone mold is removed and the piece is set aside for one or more days until completely cured. The piece can then be sandblasted, exposing the sands and micas to replicate natural stone.

Wayfinding Program for Atlantis Hotel in The Bahamas (1994)

The genesis of this product was in the 1990s when we were cooking up unique substrates for signage in hotel projects such as for Atlantis in the Bahamas, Hotel Principe Felipe in Spain and Camino Real in Costa Rica. The signage - identity, wayfinding and room numbers - was beautiful and durable. LuttStone was also used extensively in the fabrication of architectural and sculptural components, some of which are seven foot tall freestanding sculptures, for Ohana, the family restaurant at Disney Polynesian Resort in Orlando, Florida. Learn more about this work on our Luttmann Studios page.

One of 48 tiki column covers made for Ohana at the Polynesian Resort

We named it LuttStone after our family studio name.

We created it some 30 years ago and are reintroducing it in Artifaqt.

It will primarily be used to create a new line of candle holders - both tealight and taper, to pair with our beeswax candles.

New products with an old story.
