The beauty of this black finish comes from burning the wood with flame, a process called shou-sugi-ban.  It is difficult to photograph but there is more depth and richness than you can get with dye or stain. The technique originated in Japan to insect and fire proof wood siding, we’re borrowing it purely for beauty. Watch a short video of the char process.
